Picking the right gym for you can be the make or break of if you will actually go to the gym.
When I was younger I signed up to numerous gyms and ended up not using them as they ended up being too far away so I didn’t bother, I was intimidated by other gym goers or I didn’t know what I was doing so I would just get on the treadmill and make that my work out.
The main factors that I find affect if you go to a gym are location, cost/contracts, facilities, open hours, other gym goers and knowing what to do once your there.
Location- A gym needs to be easily accessible to you otherwise it will become too much of a chore for you and you won’t bother going.
Make sure it’s within an easy distance to your home or workplace so that if you do have a spare couple of hours you can easily pop down and have a workout.
Cost and contracts – These are a big factor when signing up to a gym and generally one of the first things an individual looks at when comparing gyms.
These days there’s so much competition out there that you can use this to leverage a better price and to ensure the contract be more on your terms.
Shop around and see what’s out there. Most gyms offer a few free trial sessions before you join… Utilise them! Many gyms will try and get you to sign up on your first visit without having your trial yet but don’t be pressured into signing.. They will still give you a great price after the trial.
Facilities- Ensure that the gym has the right facilities that you need.
If you’re wanting to use the gym on your way to work or have the convenience to go in between appointments make sure that there is appropriate shower and change room facilities for you. Most gyms these days supply an iron, hair dryer and hair straightener for you to use. These small things can make your day so much easier as you can have your workout, scrub up and be on your way again.
Open hours- Of late there is a new trend of more and more gyms being open 24/7. This is great as I’ve found in the past that sometimes I would go to workout but my gym was already closed. Make sure that the gym you choose to go with has open hours that suit your lifestyle. You want to be able to use the gym at the drop of a hat and really utilise having your gym membership.. What’s the point in getting a gym membership if you can never use it.
Other gym goers- This can be a really big factor for making you want to go or not want to go to a gym. Try and find a gym that a few of your friends already go to.
That way you can have a bit of a social catch up while your there and you can make working out fun. I often train with a friend and even though we push one another we’re still able to have a laugh and make it fun. All of a sudden an hour is up, our workout is complete and it feels like it’s only been 20 minutes.
Also, another factor is other gym goes.
As I travel around a lot I’ve had the opportunity to go to many different gyms and see what’s out there. I find that each gym generally has a bit of a different feel to it and attracts a different crowd. Even chain gyms seem to draw different demographics.
Find the gym that resonates with you.
You want to enjoy your workout and feel comfortable while being there and you may even make some new friends.
Knowing what to do there- A lot of the time when people go to the gym they sign up because they’re eager to get fit and healthy but then they get there and they aren’t too sure what to do. This usually ends with them steering clear of the weights section and quickly jumping on a treadmill because that’s familiar to them and what they see as a safe place, so a 30 minute jog on the treadmill becomes their workout.
I find that a great way to over come this is by going to the gym with a friend.
Often, by having your buddy there you’re more confident to try new things and you can have a bit of a laugh as you try and figure things out together. Also, you can bounce off one another and get creative coming up with new workout routines, etc.
Also, some gyms offer new clients a couple of free or cheap PT sessions to get you started. This is great as the PT can show you around the gym and help get your confidence up to do it on your own.
Now that I’ve given you some awesome new tips I’m sure you’ll be able to find the right gym for you… Happy training

My health is something that was always put on the back burner. I just stepped on the scale for the first time in years and lets just say that I’m not very happy with what I saw. I’m ready to start changing my life and I figured a good place would be the gym. This helped me a ton and I hope that I can find the right gym for me.
